SUMMARY:CDTC Community Hike: Zuni-Acoma Trail | Grants\, NM
DESCRIPTION:Spend a fall day on one of the oldest routes in New Mexico! Join Corey Torivio\, CDTC’s New Mexico Regional Representative\, and local volunteer hike leaders for a hike across El Malpais National Monument on the Zuni-Acoma Trail. Zuni and Acoma people have used this route to connect with each other for at least a thousand years\, and they still use it today. \nThe trail runs about 7.5 miles one way\, from NM 53 to NM 117\, across rugged lava flows marked by rock cairns. It’s a challenging\, full-day hike\, best for hikers who are comfortable on uneven terrain. We’ll be hiking alongside students from Cibola Outdoors’ College Outdoor Recreation Weekend\, so come ready to meet some new trail friends! \nGood to know: \n\nPlan for a full day on the trail\, about six to eight hours.\nBring lunch and plenty of water. Leather gloves help on the sharp lava rock.\nWear sturdy boots. The lava is jagged and uneven for most of the route.\nDress in layers and be ready for possible rain.\nThe trail is marked by cairns. Stay with the group\, and please don’t build new ones.
