CDTC Community Hike: Chain of Craters | Grants, NM
Walk the Continental Divide Trail past a line of volcanoes! Join CDT Ambassador Amanda Wood and local volunteer hike leaders for an easy, 8-mile hike through the Chain of Craters, a string of more than 25 cinder cones in El Malpais National Conservation Area. The trail winds through piñon and juniper woodland, with ponderosa pines at higher elevations.
This hike is part of Cibola Outdoors’ College Outdoor Recreation Weekend, and community members are welcome to join the students on the trail. Plan for up to five hours.
Good to know:
- Bring water, snacks, and sun protection.
- Dress in layers. Fall mornings near Grants start cold.
- The trail is marked by rock cairns. Stay with the group.
- Wear sturdy shoes for rocky, cinder-covered ground.
