CDTC-REI Opt Outside Hike: El Malpais National Monument | Grants, NM

Opt Outside with CDTC and REI Co-op this Thanksgiving weekend at El Malpais National Monument! Join CDTC Executive Director Teresa Martinez and New Mexico Regional Representative Corey Torivio, along with our partners at Latino Outdoors and the 52 Hike Challenge, for a family-friendly hike through a landscape of lava flows, sandstone bluffs, and deep human history.

Along the way, members of the Pueblo of Acoma will share the cultural history of this region and their community’s ties to it.

This hike is part of Opt Outside, REI Co-op’s movement to spend time outside instead of shopping. There’s no wrong way to Opt Outside®. We’ll hike about 3 to 4 miles out and back at a relaxed pace, or farther if the group is up for it. Snacks, giveaways, and other goodies are on us. Good to know:

• High-desert mornings are cold in late November, so dress in layers.
• Wear sturdy shoes. Lava rock is sharp and uneven.
• Bring water and sun protection.
