Directions

From Buena Vista take US Hwy 24 West (north) toward Leadville for approximately 20 miles to Twin Lakes. Turn left (west) on to CO 82 (Independence Pass Road). After .9 mile, turn left into the unmarked dirt road (if you cross the small bridge on 82, you have gone too far). Turn left (away from the dam) at the top of the rise, and proceed along south end of the lake to the Interlaken Trailhead. This section of road is a little rough but can be done with a 2WD.Dispersed camping area available nearby.

Wrap around the Twin Lakes, a National Historic Site and home to the largest glacial lakes in Colorado. Be sure to visit the historic 1885 Interlaken resort and Dexter House which are located on the south side of Twin Lakes. This spectacular area and once acted as a resort and hotel for the rich and famous in the late 1800’s. People traveled from all over the country to witness the beauty and splendor of the Lake Creek Valley. Today you can still revel in breathtaking scenery with amazing views of 14,000 foot+ peaks including Mt. Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado.
