Northern Terminus

The CDT has two designated termini bordering Glacier National Park (US) and Canada. Whether you are planning a long distance thru-hike or short section hike, this page contains information to help you plan your adventure on the northernmost section of the CDT.

Waterton

Waterton Monument

The Waterton terminus is accessed by foot the via the CDT (US) and the Lakeshore Trail (Canada). This is a popular terminus for hikers that want to hike into/from Canada and the Waterton Townsite. Some campsites along the Waterton route in Glacier National Park open later in the season depending on snowpack.

Chief Mountain

Chief Mountain Monument

The Chief Mountain terminus is accessed via the Chief Mountain Hwy (Hwy 17 US/ Hwy 6 CAN). The border crossing is open from May 15th – September 30th. This is a popular option for early or late-season hikers; and for hikers concerned about snow travel as the Chief Mountain route stays lower in elevation than the Waterton route.

Crossing the Border

Valid travel and indentifcation documents (Canada, United States) are required when entering the U.S or Canada.

 Waterton

Northbound (Into Canada)

Northbound hikers crossing into Canadian at Waterton Lakes, must contact the Border Information Service (BIS) at 403-653-3536 upon crossing the border at the monument. If you do not have cell reception at the terminus, you may use the phone at the Waterton Lakes Visitor’s Center during their regular business hours.

When BIS receives a CDT user call, an agent will forward it to the Chief Mountain port of entry (POE), who will process them. All decisions with regards to entry into Canada ultimately rest with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)Border Services Officer (BSO) at the POE.

There are several factors that BSOs must take into account before determining whether a person is admissible into Canada, and each person will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Candian Chief Mountain POE hours are as follows:

9a-6p May 15 to May 31
7a-10p June 1 to Labour Day
9p – 4p after Labor Day to September 30
7 days a week
Closed (October 1 – May 14).

Travelers are not permitted to use this border crossing when Chief Mountain POE is closed.

Southbound (Into the U.S.)

Hikers entering the US from Canada at Waterton Lake must use the ROAM App on a mobile device or the ROAM kiosks found at the Shoreline Cruise Dock and Waterton Parks Visitor Center. It is best to report your entry (via ROAM) the day of your departure, prior to departing the town of Waterton between 7am – 7pm (MT).

Non US Citizens

Non US citizens entering the US from Canada must first obtain an I-94 form prior to using the ROAM app and crossing at Waterton. These can be obtained from most US ports, including Chief Mountain, but not at Waterton. For more information click here.

Chief Mountain

The Chief Mountain port of entry is located on the Chief Mountain Highway. One can cross the border by automobile or foot with the necessary passports and travel documents.
